I’ve been planning on selling it for a while now, so I’m wondering, would $4,200 be near a good price? I know some of you might need pics or more info, but from what you guys know, what’s a fair price?

The one you’re willing to pay.

I’m naive and willing to pay more than many would and probably should.

Yeah I’m not so good at financial advice. I spend with heart not my brain.

It’s cool you have a bond with the car...and it is a cool car

Has it ever had a crash, paint, or body work or is there any rust? From your posts iirc it has or is developing ongoing maintenance issues...?

For comparison — it’s an eta, not a big six like your beast there :D — here’s one on BaT recently, in case you didn’t run across it...probably a top example of an early E28 with the eta. Hopefully this will be of help

Mine isn’t as pristine as that one, but it still looks good, no crashes, original paint still looks good other than a crack or two from the sun, and the only rust is surface rust at the most, other than some rain it only has seen the sun, just maybe a bit too much sun. In short it definitely shows that is was driven regularly but was taken care of.

CA car...sounds nice! If mileage isn’t, like, 375K, that may be a good ask for a car in decent cosmetic and mechanical shape (just my 02 cents FWIW)

Best wishes :)

Thanks for the help, that link to that e28 gives me plenty of hope mine will sell well.

A pristine 535i/5 with normal seats and low miles should be like $5-6k, add $1k or so for sport seats. A rusty but not totally unsafe 535i/5 should be $1500 or so....I’m thinking in CAD, mind you. That’s based on my local craigslist and forum asking prices. I don’t know/remember the details of yours, so figure where it might fit in there. I’d say you’re definitely in the ballpark though.

Isn’t the transmission messed up? I’d probably only pay 2000 if it isn’t mechanically good.

Define mechanically good, because it still drives well, it just bothers the hell out of me.

If it can be driven but needs repairs to work properly its fair condition. Which I wouldn’t pay 4000k for a fair car personally. You might be able to find someone who is willing too.
